Dear Fellow Community Hockey Members,
It is with great excitement that we announce the initiation of a new Elite hockey program starting for the 2021 – 2022 hockey season. The Greater Springfield Aces will operate out of CYR arena in Springfield, Ma and will compete in the EJEPL hockey league. The Eastern Junior Elite Prospect League (EJEPL) is comprised of teams from all around the Tri-State area. Players in the EJEPL are exposed to high tempo practices that stress player development, skill development, on & off ice-training technique to push your athletes to their peak. The “Aces” will offer programs at the Squirt (10U), Peewee (12U) & Bantam (14U) levels.
The Aces will operate under the management and ownership of Anthony Sarno, Shad Hanrahan and Johnny Sarno. Together the management team bring years of playing hockey, coaching players and owning facilities to support the training. The Greater Springfield Aces are inclusive of coaches and training staff from all levels of play throughout each of their careers.
Anthony Sarno comes to the Aces with an extensive playing and coaching resume.
Anthony played 4 years of Jr A in the EJHL, CEHL, NOJHL and NAHL before reaching the professional ranks. Anthony played his first 2 professional seasons in Europe with stops in Italy, France and Belgium. He then came back to play 5 seasons in North America between the UHL, SPHL, ECHL and the FHL. In his final 2 seasons he took on the role of player coach in the FHL. Anthony has since been the Co-Head Coach alongside his brother John Sarno of the U16 Springfield Jr Pics of the USPHL for the past 8 seasons. Anthony also serves as the Assistant coach at Western New England University NCAA Division 3. In the summer Anthony has youth hockey camps and is a skills coach for the area’s top players ranging from the NHL to College hockey.
John Sarno joins the Aces with a well-traveled background. John played Jr hockey for the Springfield Pics and in the CEHL before going to play college hockey as a true freshman at Johnson and Whales University NCAA Division 3. John played the bulk of his professional career in Europe, spending 4 seasons in France, 1 in England and 2 in the Swiss Alps. He also made stops in the AAHL and Germany. John served as player coach in his Final seasons in Europe. John has since been the Co-Head Coach alongside his brother Anthony Sarno for the Springfield Jr Pics of the USPHL for the past 8 seasons. John is also the college placement advisor for the Springfield Pics Premier club.
Andrew Furbush is entering his third season as the Western New England University Men’s Assistant Coach. Before joining WNEU Andrew coached three years with the ACHA UConn Huskies. Furbush got his coaching start with the Hartford Jr. Wolfpack assisting with the Jr. A and head coaching the Jr. B team. Furbush played college at University of Connecticut on the men’s club team where he was named all-conference twice and an All-American his junior year. Andrew played junior hockey for the Springfield Pics for Coach Bonneau and the Hartford Jr. Wolfpack. Andrew graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from UConn, and a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting from Post University. Furbush has also privately coached/trained NCAA/Junior goaltenders the past eight years.
Nielsson “Archie” Arcibal is a native of Vista, California and now resides in Western, MA with his wife and children. He attended American International College where he played Division 1 ice hockey and served as Captain. Until recently held the all-time assist record for the program. Prior to college he was drafted to the Texas Tornado of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) where he was part of the national championship team in 2006. Following his two years with the Tornado he played in the United States Hockey League (USHL) for the Des Moines Buccaneers where he received a scholarship to AIC. Following graduation, he played professional hockey in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), and in Sweden.
The Aces support our goalies in working with Stop It Goaltending at the MCU Training Center in Agawam. Stop It Goaltending has developed a system in which to teach goaltending that is second to none and we do it in an environment where the goalies are challenged yet have fun at the same time. Since 1999, Stop it Goaltending has experienced tremendous success in developing goaltenders of all levels and abilities.
Stop It Goaltending has been instrumental in the development of twenty-five NHL draft picks and over one hundred goalies that have gone on to college and pro hockey. For more information visit StopItGoaltending.com.
